A superb Nelson Piquet signed period photograph capturing the Brazilian Formula One legend driving the iconic Brabham-Ford BT49C at the 1981 Monaco Grand Prix. Held on 31 May 1981 around the demanding streets of Monte Carlo, the race became one of the memorable Monaco grands prix of the early 1980s.
Piquet was at the height of his Brabham powers, taking pole position for the race and leading much of the Grand Prix in the Gordon Murray-designed BT49C. His Monaco charge ended dramatically when he crashed out after 53 laps, handing the lead to Alan Jones before Gilles Villeneuve went on to claim a famous victory for Ferrari. Piquet would later go on to win the 1981 Formula One World Championship, the first of his three drivers’ titles.
Signed in period, Nelson Piquet’s signature is a particularly fine example
