Luigi Fagioli Signed Official Mercedes-Benz Driver Card

A highly desirable original Mercedes-Benz factory driver card, personally signed and inscribed by legendary Italian Grand Prix racer Luigi Fagioli.

Produced as an official Mercedes-Benz Werkphoto, the card depicts Fagioli seated in the W25, wearing the traditional cloth helmet and goggles associated with the heroic pre-war era. The printed German caption identifies him as “Der Mercedes-Benz-Rennfahrer Luigi Fagioli”.

Fagioli was one of the leading competitors of European Grand Prix racing’s golden age. After making his competition debut in 1926, he secured his first significant victory in 1930 before becoming Italian Champion in 1933 with the Alfa Romeo team operated by Enzo Ferrari. His combination of consistency, determination and fiery temperament earned him a place in the Mercedes-Benz works team for the 1934 season.

Driving the celebrated Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows, Fagioli achieved major victories at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, the Spanish Grand Prix at Lasarte and the Coppa Acerbo at Pescara. The following season brought further success, including victory at the prestigious 1935 Monaco Grand Prix, where he led from start to finish, and the Penya Rhin Grand Prix in Barcelona.

Remarkably, Fagioli returned to frontline competition after the Second World War and joined Alfa Romeo for the inaugural Formula One World Championship in 1950. Despite being in his early fifties, he recorded five podium finishes and ended the season third in the championship behind Giuseppe Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio. In 1951, he shared victory with Fangio at the French Grand Prix, becoming the oldest driver ever credited with a Formula One World Championship victory at 53 years and 22 days—a record that still stands.

Fagioli’s life was tragically cut short in 1952 following injuries sustained while practising in a Lancia Aurelia for the sports-car race at Monaco. His death brought to an end the career of one of the most determined and accomplished drivers of both the pre-war Grand Prix era and the earliest years of Formula One.

The signature and extensive handwritten inscription extend prominently across the lower portion of the photograph. Signed material connected directly to Fagioli’s Mercedes-Benz career is particularly evocative, combining an authentic autograph with an official period image from one of the most important teams in motor-racing history.
