Jackie Stewart Handwritten Letter, 1963

An exceptionally rare early handwritten letter from Jackie Stewart, written and sent from his family home at Clayton, Milton, Dumbarton, on 7 July 1963.

Addressed to respected Scottish motoring journalist Eric Dymock, the letter extends across three handwritten sides of two sheets and provides a fascinating insight into Stewart’s life and emerging motor-racing career, nearly two years before his Formula One debut.

Stewart discusses arrangements for an upcoming race meeting at Snetterton, proposing that he fly from Renfrew to London to avoid the heavy Glasgow Fair and English holiday traffic. He suggests meeting Dymock on the Saturday before travelling together to Norwich, where he had booked a double room and where the rest of the racing team would also be staying. Stewart explains that they could return to London following Sunday’s race in time for his late-evening flight to Prestwick, adding that, should Dymock be unable to attend, he would instead drive to Snetterton and return immediately after the event.

Of particular historical interest, Stewart confirms that he would be driving one of “D.M.’s cars” for the remainder of the season and probably the following year, documenting an important moment during the formative stages of his professional racing career. The letter also contains references to the RAC and Stewart’s direct telephone number in Dumbarton.

Written in blue ink and signed simply “Yours, Jackie,” this highly personal correspondence captures the future three-time Formula One World Champion before international fame, discussing the practical realities of travelling to and competing at British race meetings.
