An exceptionally rare original and large signed photograph of Achille Varzi, personally inscribed, dedicated and dated 1937, representing one of the finest surviving autographed pieces from the golden age of Grand Prix racing.
Achille Varzi (1904–1948) was one of the most celebrated and complex figures of pre-war motorsport. European Grand Prix Champion in 1934, he achieved major victories at the Monaco Grand Prix, Mille Miglia, Targa Florio and Tripoli Grand Prix, and was a leading driver for Enzo Ferrari’s Scuderia Ferrari running Alfa Romeo’s and Auto Union during the legendary Silver Arrows era. His intense rivalry with Tazio Nuvolari remains one of the defining narratives of early Grand Prix history.
By the mid-1930s, including 1937, Varzi’s career was increasingly overshadowed by a well-documented addiction to morphine, a struggle that led to a decline in performance and periods of isolation from top-level competition. His subsequent recovery and courageous return to racing after the Second World War only deepened the dramatic arc of his life and legacy, making artifacts from his peak years especially significant.
Tragically, Varzi’s life and career were cut short in 1948, when he was killed during the Swiss Grand Prix at Bremgarten, following an accident in wet conditions. His death at just 44 years of age cemented his status as one of motorsport’s most poignant figures, and significantly contributes to the rarity and historical importance of surviving signed material.
The photograph measures an unusually large 240 x 180 mm, far exceeding standard formats of the period. Large-format signed photographs from the 1930s are exceptionally scarce, making this example particularly desirable to serious collectors and investors. Varzi is pictured in period race suit with his characteristic round goggles around his neck.
The piece shows prominent vertical and horizontal crease / fold lines, entirely consistent with its age and handling over many decades. Such characteristics are to be expected for a large photograph approaching ninety years old and do not detract from its historical integrity.
A rare, investment-grade example of pre-war motorsport memorabilia from one of racing’s most revered and tragically lost legends.
