Achille Varzi Signed and Inscribed Photograph – Buenos Aires, 1947

A remarkable original oversized photograph hand signed by legendary Italian racing driver Achille Varzi and dated Buenos Aires, March 1947.

The photograph shows Varzi seated behind the wheel, wearing his distinctive racing helmet and goggles. Across the image, he has written an extensive personal inscription to fellow racing driver Pablo Luis Pesatti, signing beneath and adding the location and date, “Buenos Aires 3-1947”.

This is considerably more significant than a conventional signed photograph. The lengthy dedication demonstrates a genuine personal connection between two contemporary drivers, capturing the friendship, mutual respect and camaraderie that existed between competitors during one of motorsport’s most dangerous eras. Material exchanged directly between racing drivers is exceptionally rare, having been privately presented rather than produced for supporters or commercial distribution.

The dating places the photograph during Varzi’s celebrated post-war visit to Argentina, where he competed in the prestigious Temporada races. At the 1947 Buenos Aires Grand Prix, Varzi drove an Alfa Romeo 308 and finished second to Luigi Villoresi, separated by just one second after 50 laps of the Retiro street circuit.

Achille Varzi is regarded as one of the greatest Grand Prix drivers of the pre-war era. Beginning his career in motorcycle racing, he progressed to motor racing in 1928 and achieved major success with Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Bugatti and Auto Union. His many victories included the 1933 Monaco Grand Prix, the Mille Miglia, two Targa Florio victories and three Tripoli Grand Prix wins. Renowned for his smooth, controlled and technically precise driving style, Varzi became the great contemporary rival of Tazio Nuvolari.

Following the Second World War, Varzi made an extraordinary return to frontline competition with Alfa Romeo. In 1946, he won the Turin Grand Prix, frequently recognised as the first race held under the newly introduced Formula One regulations. His time in Argentina also brought him into contact with the young Juan Manuel Fangio, who greatly admired Varzi and regarded him as an important mentor.

Varzi was tragically killed during practice for the Swiss Grand Prix on 1 July 1948, making original period-signed material particularly scarce. Dating from the final full season of his career, this Buenos Aires photograph represents an important and deeply evocative piece of early Grand Prix history.

The oversized photograph measures approximately 9.5 x 7 inches and displays expected age-related wear. Varzi’s coveted signature and extensive personal inscription remain clearly visible, giving the piece exceptional historical character and provenance.
